Rank Math vs Yoast 2021: Which SEO Plugin is Better?

Rank Math vs Yoast is the question you will ask yourself when choosing the best plugin for your blog or website. This post will help you answer that question.

Rank Math vs Yoast is a very common question now. Until two years ago, Yoast was THE choice as the WordPress SEO plugin for any blog or website.

That was until Rank Math appeared. This plugin offers ranks for up to five keywords in its free version, and that was a good hook to catch bloggers and website owners to switch their SEO plugin.

But after the hype, many bloggers started to doubt if they should go back to Yoast or remain with Rank Math.

I understand why this happened because that happened to me. I started this blog using Rank Math, then I switched to Yoast, and now I am using Rank Math again.

The way you approach SEO will help you decide which plugin to use

You know about SEO, I know about SEO, but like everything in life, we see SEO in different ways. Why is that?

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a discipline that is based on what we think we know about how the search engines work, but we don’t know for sure how the Google algorithm works, or how the Bing algorithm works. We can only guess how their algorithm works.

For that reason, the way I look at SEO is very different to how you look at it.

There are some elements of SEO that I am sure we all agree are important, like:

  • Backlinks
  • Creating quality content
  • Picking the right keywords

The way I manage search engine optimization is in this post: Search Engine Optimization Tutorial for Beginners.

But I am sure there are other elements on which we disagree.

It is the same with the SEO plugins; every developer looks at SEO in different ways, and their plugin is their vision.

All the SEO plugins have one goal, and that is to help you rank high on the search engines, especially on Google.

Similarities between Rank Math and Yoast

In this Rank Math vs Yoast SEO comparison, we will first look at the similarities between these two plugins.

If you want more in-depth information of these two plugins, you can read these two posts:

Rank Math Review: Is Rank Math the best WordPress SEO Plugin?

Like I told you before, these two plugins want to give you the help you need to rank high on the search engines.

For that reason, let’s look at the similarities between Rank Math and Yoast, and see if there is a winner.

Meta Description

These two plugins help you with your metadata in a very similar way:

Yoast

Rank Math

As you can see, with both plugins you can edit your title, the URL and the description for pages or posts.

Well, that is only basic SEO so there isn’t much difference.

Rank Math vs Yoast: Tied

And that is all the similarities between these two plugins.

These plugins only agree on the way to insert the metadata of your pages or posts.

Differences between Rank Math and Yoast

Now let’s look at the differences between Rank Math and Yoast.

Configuration

The way these two plugins view the SEO begins with the configuration.

Personally, I felt Yoast’s configuration to be a little more tricky. When I did Yoast’s configuration, I had to read some posts on the Yoast blog to understand the reasoning behind every little thing.

At the end, to make sure that all was good and to have peace of mind, I hired an SEO expert on Fiverr to check out my configuration.

On the other hand, with Rank Math, the configuration was straightforward; I did not have any problem with the configuration of this plugin.

Let me explain to you about the configuration in a little more detail.

Yoast

For example, Yoast has this configuration:

This one is simple and basic, but then…

Here I had to figure out what taxonomies is about, and in the meta description, there are many variables to choose from, so it is not an easy configuration.

Rank Math

For me, the configuration of Rank Math was easier and more straightforward.

Editing a category was easy.

And like I told you before, editing the home page metadata is similar to Yoast.

It is my personal opinion but:

Rank Math vs Yoast: The winner is Rank Math.

Writing a post

Here is the main reason for this post about Rank Math vs Yoast.

Yoast and Rank Math show how they  SEO when you write a post.

Why is that?

Because the SEO rules are not written in stone, so everyone has a different point of view.

The length of the post

Just to give you an example, there is a discussion about how long a post should be.

There are people who say longer posts are better, for example, more than 2000 words: The SEO Benefits of Long Form Content.

And there are people who say: Is longer really better? How Focused and Comprehensive Content Ranks Better.

As you can see, when talking about SEO, we can find two, three, four or more different points of view.

But we are talking about Rank Math vs Yoast, so let’s focus on those plugins.

For example, for Rank Math to give you a green check for the length of your post, you have to write 2501 words.

Because for them, the longer the post the better. It is their vision of search engine optimization.

But Yoast does not care about the length of your post; they care about other things.

As you can see, if you want to choose between Rank Math or Yoast, the main thing you have to keep in mind is your vision about SEO.

It is my personal opinion but:

Rank Math vs Yoast: The winner is Rank Math.

In my experience, the longer your posts are, the better chance you have of ranking on the search engines.

Ok, I do not always write posts with 2500 words, but my longest posts tend to rank on Google sooner than other posts with 1500 or 1250 words.

Keyword stuffing

Keyword stuffing is when you write your keyword several times throughout your post. 15 or 20 years ago, that was a good idea, now it isn’t.

Again, at this point, Rank Math and Yoast disagree.

How do they disagree?

For example, in Rank Math, if you write a 2500-word post, your keyword has to appear at least 24 times.

For some SEOs, keyword stuffing works, but for others it doesn’t.

I changed from Rank Math to Yoast on a recommendation from an SEO professional, who said that Yoast is better; the keyword stuffing was an issue and according to him, that was the reason I was not ranking on Google.

Then I went back to Rank Math because I was not happy with that SEO professional, and my new SEO professional told me that Rank Math is a better option for my blog. She told me again about the keyword stuffing, but according to Rank Math, everything was good. So we agree that everything is good.

The difference with Yoast is that if you write a 2500-word post, you just need to write your keyword ten times to get the green check.

Again, these two SEO plugins approach SEO in different ways.

Which one is correct? The answer is up to you. The way you look at SEO is the answer.

In my case, I am working with an SEO professional who is helping me to get backlinks and with the overall strategy. Also, she  is someone that I can talk to in case I have doubts, and both of us like to work with Rank Math.

It is my personal opinion but:

Rank Math vs Yoast: The winner is Rank Math.

Writing a post for your blog

Now it is time to talk to you about how to pick an SEO plugin, to shape the way you write a post.

This is true because, for Yoast, the way you write is very important.

For example, if you start a paragraph with the same word three times, Yoast gives you a warning.

This is not important for Rank Math.

Another example is that Yoast gives you a warning if your keyword is not in at least two or three subtitles.

In Rank Math, if your keyword is in one subtitle everything is ok.

As you can see, picking an SEO plugin will shape the way you write in the long run.

It is my personal opinion but:

Rank Math vs Yoast: Tied.

Conclusion

In my experience, Rank Math has a better approach for search engine optimization.

I believe that writing a keyword more times can give you a better chance of ranking on the search engines.

I know that this post has less than 2500 words, but for me, this is a complementary post that closes the topic of SEO plugins. I have no intention to rank it; it’s just to complement other posts.

But who knows, maybe it will rank.

What I want to say is that if I want to be 100% sure that a topic for my blog will rank, I write 2500 words.

If I have to recommend an SEO plugin for your blog right now, I would recommend Rank Math.

I like this plugin and because many of my posts are ranking, I can say that the plugin helps with the SEO strategy of my blog.

I wrote this Rank Math vs Yoast article because I know is a difficult choice to make.

Like I said before if you have to choose between Rank Math vs Yoast your will make a decision based in your experience with SEO.

For me, If I have to choose between Rank Math vs Yoast I still will choose Rank Math.

Because between Rank Math vs Yoast I like the way Rank Math sees the SEO.

For me the winner between Rank Math vs Yoast is Rank Math.
