On the RankMath blog, I found this post: Power Words: The Art of Writing Headlines That Get Clicked

Before reading the RankMath post, I had never heard of the Power Words concept for writing good catchy titles.

What are Power Words?

According to RankMath:

We should write good blog titles

The time has come to write the first post for your new blog with a good headline. You have the idea in your head; surely you have written something on paper that tries to give you an idea of the path that the post will follow, but this question comes to your mind … What will be the headline?

Now you will see how to use the Power Words:

Examples of good catchy titles

First let’s start with some examples of good headlines:

Catchy-Titles

As you can see these good catchy titles have a word or a number that attracts the attention of the readers or that tells them this post will solve the problems they have.

Good catchy titles can start with:

How

Imagine that your cell phone is broken, the first thing you will do is ask Google: How do I fix my cell phone? Or, if you’re hungry, you will search: How do I cook noodles?

When we make a headline with the word How, it is because we know that our content explains a complex issue in simple steps and that it is much appreciated by the public who have a specific need.

When someone tells you how to do it, you already know that you will not have to look for more information. On the contrary, you will do what they tell you because they are solving the problem for you.

Examples of good catchy titles with How:

  • How to get more followers on Instagram?
  • How to configure the hosting for my blog?

Numbers

It is difficult to explain but a post with a number in the headline works very well, we can say that it is an unspoken rule of the Internet.

Humans like to know how much of something there is. We like lists. We like rankings. We like statistics. Humans like numbers.

Examples of good catchy titles with Numbers:

  • 7 tips to get the perfect match.
  • 4 steps to a perfect salad.

Guide

When readers are searching to find a solution for their need, and they find a headline with the word Guide, immediately there is a 90% chance of them clicking on that link.

At the time of writing a Guide Post for your readers, you must explain each step to find the solution for the problem and provide many examples.

Examples of good catchy titles with GUIDE:

  • A complete guide to get leads on Facebook.
  • A guide to understand the TIK TOK phenomenon.

Why

A headline with a Why means that you are answering a question that many people ask themselves. If you are thinking of writing a post title with a Why, you must do a lot of research because if you do not answer the question correctly the bounce rate of your blog will be very high.

Examples of good catchy titles with Why:

  • Why do teenagers no longer use Facebook?
  • Why does nobody read my blog?

What

When you use the word What in the headline, it should be to explain concepts unknown to your readers. It has to be concepts you can master and explain without problems.

Examples of good catchy titles with What:

  • What is SEO?
  • What is the bounce rate?

Tips

You can surprise your readers by giving them tips that they didn’t know they needed. Writing the word TIPS in the title will make readers want to read your post.

Examples of good catchy titles with Tips:

  • Weight loss tips.
  • 5 tips for a good BBQ.

Secrets

A word that if well used in the title can help you generate visits to the blog. We all like secrets, so that word attracts visitors. I recommend you only use the word on special occasions.

Examples of good catchy titles with Secrets:

  • Secrets for a good BBQ sauce.
  • I will share these secrets to get you the love of your life.

Examples of good catchy titles

Let’s review how bloggers use Power Words for their good catching titles.

I will Google “Web Hosting Review”:

example1 good catching titles

You can see that in the first search results the most used word is “BEST” and they are all good catchy titles. If you want to review Web Hosting, will you use the word BEST or another word to differentiate yourself?

My recommendation is to continue using the word BEST together with other words like TOP.

Remember that you are in competition for the click and you must differentiate yourself.

Another example. Now I will Google “Peru Travel Checklist”.

Once again you can see good catchy titles. In this search, you can see Power Words as: “The Only”, “What”, “Comprehensive”.

They are very good Power Words and help to catch the reader’s attention.

Use Power Words to enrich the good catchy titles you write for your posts and to capture the reader’s attention.

Extra tips for good catchy titles

Now that you have seen how to make good catchy titles for your blog that will bring you visits, it is important to complement it with these tips:

extra-tips-good-catching-titles

The main keyword of your post should be in the headline. It may happen that you have written your post with several keywords in mind but only the main one should go in the title. Having the main keyword in the title will help a lot with SEO.

Write headlines with a maximum of 50 characters. On desktop, Google shows a maximum of 60 characters and on a mobile, only 50. It is not good for you to write long titles.

The title of the blog must be concise. The readers should know what they will find immediately.

Create expectations. A headline that appears in Google’s Search Engine Results Page or in a Facebook feed should lead to that person immediately clicking on it. That should be your goal when writing the title of the post.

Brainstorm with someone else. Another tip for a good catching title: according to HubSpot, a brainstorm should be done with someone else, to have fresh angles to reach your readers.

Having the opinion of a person you trust about the headline for your post will be very helpful because it will give you a different vision than the one you currently have.

Any help is welcome to achieve the reader´s click.

Final tip for good catchy titles

Starting your post by writing the headline helps you focus the direction of the post, for example, this post has had 3 to 4 headlines and I will surely change it when I finish writing it and give it a last read.

What I want to say is that you can create a provisional headline or headlines to focus the direction of the post and change them if you think the post is taking another direction because the topic you have thought of for the post can be approached in different ways.

A provisional title helps you and leads you to the creation of a unique post.

The Technology Savvy

For this post the topic was good catchy titles, in my mind I had these headlines:

  • How to write good catchy titles?
  • Write good catchy titles for SEO.
  • Tips for good catchy titles.

Finally, I decided on ‘Tips for good catching titles’ but this ended up becoming: 7 great tips to write catchy titles and grab readers

As you can see, I had a provisional title that helped me focus the post but when I finished the post and read it again, I changed it to a title that reflects what I had written.
